Division of Family Medicine and Primary Care

?Clinical Services and Social Impa?ct? ?

The Division supports clinical service delivery at primary care facilities and district hospitals? across the Metro and Rural Health Services. Family physicians at these facilities may be joint staff or clinical trainers within the Division. 

The Division is implementing Group Empowerment and Training (GREAT) for people with type 2 diabetes in several provinces of South Africa. This aims to empower people to self-manage their condition, improve their glycaemic control and avoid complications.

The Division has an active partnership with Greenpop, a non-profit organization that focuses on reforestation, ecosystem restoration and environmental education. Our students participate in Greenpop events. Currently we have received a Social Impact grant for a project to restore the ecosystem at Helderberg Hospital.

The Division is an active member of the Climate Change, Migration and Health network and coordinates the Africa Hub. 

The Division coordinates the Primary Care and Family Medicine (PRIMAFAMED) network in sub-Saharan Africa. This focuses on educational and research capacity building across institutions in 25 countries. 

The Division actively advocates for the contribution of family medicine to the South African health care system in collaboration with the South African Academy of Family Physicians?.

The Divisions also actively collaborates with the World Organization of Family Doctors? in the Africa Region and globally. Prof Bob Mash is the convenor of the WONCA World Conference in Cape Town 2027 WONCA 2027? and is President Elect of WONCA Africa.
